Carmen's Bio

In addition to publishing "Tri-Mesa Community Newsletter," Carmen is a freelance journalist and a motivational speaker.  She also often manages to get her opinion published in several papers.

Background

San Diego became Carmen's home when she left active duty army to attend San Diego State University, where she earned her bachelors in Linguistics.  Carmen also became an army officer while attending San Diego State University.

After years of training troops, Carmen decided that San Diego is her home.  And it was when her civilian career led her to move out of San Diego, that Carmen made the commitment to do what she had to do, to move back, and to remain in "America's Finest City."

In 1999, when Carmen discovered her life's mission, she returned to San Diego with the determination to watch the papers closely for causes for which she could contribute.

Amongst other big events, this determination led Carmen to help solve a crime at one of the local non-profit treatment facilities, where a teenage girl died, due to improper handling of her case, by the treatment facility employees.

In response to Carmen's written advice to the local papers, towards solving this case, Carmen obtained her coveted San Diego Police Department Media Relations Badge.

This set things in motion for Carmen, as she then chose to be a freelance journalist.

Causes

In 2001, just after 911, when San Diego had just solidified their commitment to form and celebrate Fleet Week, they considered shutting down, out of respect for the country, or political uncertainty - however you might look at this.  Carmen stepped in, introducing herself as someone who could get Coca Cola to donate all the soft drinks to the dignitaries attending this honorable event, if the San Diego Fleet Week organization would commit to not allowing terrorist to control our choices.

With her letter to Coca Cola, proposing this support, and Coca Cola's resounding "yes," to this request, San Diego's Fleet Week went on despite the countries grief.
